The three stone ring is a powerful symbol of the enduring love of a couple over a lifetime. One stone symbolizes the past, another the present, and the third symbolizes the future that is yet to come.
The classic design uses three diamonds of the same shape, with the center being equal to the weight of the outside two diamonds combined.
A common variation is to use a different shape for the sides then the center.
Pointed shapes like the triangle cut, pear shape, or heart shape is used with the point creating a stylish tapering form.
The traditional version has a ratio of 1:2:1; for example 1/4ct sides with a 1/2ct center. However, increasing the size of the center in proportion to the outsides can provide a pleasing and unique form of three-stone ring. Many people creating their own three stone design have found a 1:3:1 or even a 1:4:1 ratio pleasing.
Another variation which has been used is the tapered version where the largest diamond is at one end of the row, and the diamonds graduate to smaller sizes.
