Purple in color, the name derives from the Greek word "amethystos" that means "not drunk." Historically amethyst was considered a rare gem until large deposits of the gem were discovered in Brazil. St Valentine is said to have worn a amethyst ring carved with an image of cupid.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February and is also the gem for 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries.
